QUIKSILVEREDITION HAWAII VINTAGE SURF AUCTION
BOASTS LARGEST COLLECTION EVER
Auction
Date: Saturday, July 19, 2003
Pikake Room, Blaisdell Center, Honolulu, Hawaii
(Monday,
June 30, 2003) Honolulu, HAWAII. - The Quiksilveredition
Hawaiian Islands Vintage Surf Auction, boasting the largest
and most comprehensive collection of vintage surfboards
and surf memorabilia ever to be assembled in the one place,
will be the center of international attention Saturday,
July 19, in the Galleria located at the Blaisdell Center.
With
less than three weeks remaining before all items go under
the hammer, the response from the public and collectors
alike has been overwhelming. A storehouse of collectible
surf treasures has been unearthed. While the auction will
feature classic surf art, books, magazines, Hawaiiana and
collectible clothing, the rare and valuable assortment of
surfboards will undoubtedly be the main attraction.
"The
assortment of rare, hard to find, personalized boards with
a lot of histiory are what make this offering unique,"
said Auction coordinator and surf aficionado Randy Rarick.
"Depending upon who you are and your knowledge of the
history of surfing, some of the surfboards we have uncovered
might well be considered priceless."
Among
those up for bid: early wood surfboards from the Waikiki
hey-deys of the 20's and 30's; a 1950's balsa board from
legendary surf pioneer Woody Brown; a fantastic assortment
of big-wave "guns" from the 1960's, owned and
shaped by the likes of George Downing, Dick Brewer, Buffalo
Keaulana, Phil Edwards, Ben Aipa and Wally Froiseth; late
60's psychedelic shortboards; and surfboards ridden by 70's
stars the likes of Reno Abellira, Barry Kanaiaupuni, Nat
Young and even Gerry Lopez's famous 1976 Pipeline Masters
board.
If
surfboards aren't your focus, there are a myriad of rare
collectibles to make a bid on: a bathing costume, circa
1930, from the Moana Hotel; Paul Strauch's jacket from the
first Smirnoff Pro-Am Surfing Classic; even a poster from
Elvis's "Paradise Hawaiian Style". Or perhaps
the diverse surf-art collection that includes a few never-before-seen
items to be unveiled at the auction. These new works are
by world famous surf artists John Severson, Kevin Short,
Dan Fletcher and surfing champion turned artist Jeannie
Chesser, produced especially for this event. In addition,
ultra rare etchings, prints and woodblocks from the 18th
& 19th century depicting the first images of surfing
will be on offer.
"We've
actually got too much good stuff," says Rarick, but
we will definitely be putting at least the best of it out
there. While there will be plenty of fun, totally affordable
authentic items available, some of the more unique and classic
pieces will definitely be for the high-end, hardcore collectors.
The most serious surf collectors in the world have confirmed
that they'll be here and there's no doubt in my mind that
some of these articles will break the records we set two
years ago."
While
that might put some bidders on the sidelines, its great
news for the Hawaiian Lifeguard Association Junior Guard
Program, who will be the beneficiaries of monies raised
during this Auction.
The
Hawaiian Islands Vintage Surf Auction will be held in conjunction
with the Hawaii All-Collectors Show 2003, at the Blaisdell
Center. In addition to the main auction, a silent auction
will feature items such as decals, surf movie posters, magazines
and other eclectic surf memorabilia and Hawaiiana at popular
prices.
Auction
previews will be held Friday, July 18, from 4pm to 9pm,
and Saturday, July 19, from 11am to 4pm, in the Galleria
at the Blaisdell Center. The silent auction will take place
between 2pm and 4:30pm, Saturday, July 19th, and the main
auction will occur in the Pikake Room, from 5pm to 10pm,
Saturday, July 19th. Admission is free to view the collection,

Friday,
April 5, 2003 - (Honolulu, HAWAII) - - After the
unprecedented success of the first ever Hawaii Islands Vintage
Surf Auction in 2001, QUIKSILVEREDITION is proud to announce
that the event will return to the Blaisdell Center in Honolulu
again this year, on Saturday, July 19th. With less than
four months remaining before items go under the hammer,
Surf Auction producer Randy Rarick is opening the door for
items to be consigned.
The
auction will feature surf memorabilia, Hawaiiana and surf
collectibles and will feature a variety of classic pieces
such as vintage Waikiki redwood and hollow surfboards, a
1930's bathing suit from the Moana Hotel, big wave "guns"
from the 1960's, early '70's shortboards, including personal
boards of Gerry Lopez, Barry Kanaiaupuni and Larry Bertlemann,
surf movie posters, decals, old photos, and Duke Kahanamoku
memorabilia, among other items. The Quiksilveredition Hawaiian
Islands Vintage Surf Auction will also include one-of-a-kind
island surf art and popular Hawaiiana pieces.
The
first Hawaiian Islands Vintage Surf Auction was a huge success
with more than 200 auction lots going under the hammer.
Record sales generated over $220,000 with the highest ticket
item a 1930's Pacific System Homes 11 foot, redwood, balsa
board that fetched $18,200.
This
year the auction will again be held in conjunction with
the Hawaii All-Collectors Show 2003, one of Hawaii's most
popular collector shows with over 200 vendors, and will
benefit the Hawaiian Lifeguard Association "Junior
Guard Program".
Former
professional surfer and renowned Hawaii surf promoter Randy
Rarick produced the inaugural auction and will be back at
the helm this summer. More than 40 years of travel, competing
and promoting within the surf industry have afforded Rarick
the best contacts in the business. Subsequently, he has
access to some of the best collectibles from around the
world. Unique surf articles and surf-related Hawaiiana pieces
have already been gathered from Peru, Australia and the
mainland, but all pieces are unique and specifically of
a Hawaii theme.
"Surf
memorabilia and Hawaiiana have become hot items for collectors
around the world," says Rarick. "Particularly,
the Hawaii theme has become fashionable world wide and the
collection of Hawaiiana pieces of historical value is becoming
serious business."
But
Rarick believes that some of the best pieces are still hiding
out here in Hawaii.
"We
are hoping that word of this Vintage Surf Auction will encourage
the public here in Hawaii to take a good look at old items
they may have around their homes or tucked away in a garage
or attic. We are looking to make this the best auction ever
by uncovering pieces that have never been offered before.
For sure, the best Hawaiian surf collectibles are probably
right here in Hawaii. Those consigning pieces to the auction
will receive 90% of monies raised with 10% being donated
to the Junior Lifeguard Program."
Previews of pieces to be auctioned can be viewed at www.hawaiiansurfauction.com
<http://www.hawaiiansurfauction.com> , with new pieces
to be added on a weekly basis.
In
addition to an excellent collection of items, some of surfing's
biggest legends will also be in attendance at the auction,
offering up and personalizing some of their own most valuable
pieces. Big wave legends such as Fred Hemmings, Ricky Grigg
and Greg Noll will be present along with world class shapers
such as Joe Quiqq, Dick Brewer and Ben Aipa. Stars of the
'70's shortboard revolution will be there along with todays
top pros.
If
you would like to assist the affair by adding an auction
item, please contact Randy Rarick or plan to attend in person.
