HIGHLY ANTICIPATED VINTAGE SURF AUCTION RETURNS TO HONOLULU
Biennial Event Lures Collectors from Around the World

HONOLULU (February 17, 2009) - Mark your calendars! With 5 months to go, the fifth biennial Hawaiian Islands Vintage Surf Auction, presented by Quiksilver Premium, is set to raise the bar on international surf auctions once again when it returns to the Blaisdell Center, Honolulu, on July 17 & 18. Over the past four auctions more than $1,500,000 of the finest vintage surfboards and surf memorbilia have changed hands and over $75,000 has been donated to various charitable causes and foundations.

This year's auction is already shaping up to be the biggest and best yet.  As has become the tradition, veteran surfboard designers, shapers and manufactures will be in attendance, including Matt Kivlin, Joe Quigg, Greg Noll, Dick Brewer, Ben Aipa, Bing Copeland, and Ole Olson, amongst a host of others.

Surf stars of the '60s the likes of Jock Sutherland, Fred Hemmings, Ricky Grigg, Joey Cabell, Buffalo Keaulana and many others will also be on hand. They will be joined by short board pioneers of the '70s & '80s: Pipeline Masters Gerry Lopez, Rory Russell and Jeff Crawford; as well as world champions Mark Richards, Peter Townend, Shaun Tomson, and Tom Carroll, all of whom will have personalized surfboards from the various eras. They will be joined by revered Hawaii surfers Larry Bertlemann, Barry Kanaiaupuni and Bobby Owens.

Never-before-seen surfboards have been unearthed, including an ancient 1850 breadfruit board, turn-of-the-century redwood planks, hollow paddle boards, design-changing early wood/fiberglass prototypes, big wave "guns" of the '60s, and pro boards of the '70s and '80s.

Along with the treasure trove of surfboards will be an eclectic selection of Hawaiian-theme artwork, surf contest items, unique island-influenced surf memorabilia, some of the first images of surfing ever depicted in print from Missonary times, off-beat surf advertising from early media, and other rare finds.

The ever-popular "Antiques Road Show"-style appraisals will be back again for those curious to find out the value of personal surf collectibles.

Event Producer Randy Rarick is looking forward to picking up again with this highly anticipated mid-summer event that originated in 2001 and has been held every other year, with the last auction in 2007.

"This will be our fifth auction in Honolulu and I'm really proud to say that it has grown to be recognized around the world as the best vintage surf auction there is," said Rarick. "With the unique mixture of items on offer, it's guaranteed to appeal to every surf enthusiast."

Search for Unique Items Continues:
"We are still on the hunt for items to round out the offerings and hope that people will come forward with unique items for possible consignment," added Rarick.

The Hawaiian Islands Vintage Surf Auction, presented by Quiksilver Premium, is run in conjunction with the All Collectors Show 2009, at the Blaisdell Center and, as such, will offer a wide variety of items that are sure to be of interest to more than just the avid surf collector.

The auction has acted as a fundraiser for various enities and 2009 will be no exception; a portion of the proceeds will benifit a variety of foundations this year that include the following: The Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Foundation, The Surfing Heritage Foundation, and The Surfrider Foundation (Hawaii Chapter).

So, if you have an old surf collectable, dig it out of the closet or garage and come be part of the fun! To consign an item or for further event information, visit the website: www.hawaiiansurfauction.com or contact Randy Rarick.
