Engraving of Captain Cooks Arrival in Hawaii 1785 "Vue du Karakakooa, Owyhee"
Western man's first image of a surfboard, taken from a drawing by John Webber, Captain Cook's shipboard artist. This is a folio edition plate from the 4 volume French edition, "Troisieme voyage de Cook ou voyage a L'Ocean Pacifique", (Cook's 3rd Voyage to the Pacific Ocean), published by Hotel de Thou, Paris, 1785. The engravings by Webber were used by the French engraver, Benard with French titles substituted. These were of equal quality to the English edition, using good strong hand-made paper. Published in 1785, one year after the English edition. Matted and framed 24" X 17". Pre-auction estimate; $1250- $1750. Click here to Return to Program
