Vintage Surfing Woodblocksby Ambrose Patterson1920's & E.M. Washington (Lot of 3)
We are very proud to have these woodblocks available and at the same time, clarify a bit ofa mysteryabout them. The first item of this lot is a 1920's framed woodblock by artist Ambrose Patterson (1877-1966), issued in an edition of only 15 copies. 10.5 X 8 inches, signed in pencil by the artist and titled "Surfriders Honolulu" in the lower margin.Matted and framed. The second item is the rare 1928 booklet published to promote Mr. Patterson's Hawaiian woodblocks, including this one. It includes various other Hawaiian themed woodblocks. The last item is a near duplicate woodblock done in the 1990's by American artist, E.M. Washington. Matted and framed. Washington would date his pieces based on the subject date of the item he was marketing, thus the "original image" would mean when it was done by the original artist, not the '90's version. The differences between the 1920's original and this 1990's "copy" are (1) the size of the 1990's woodblock is larger and (2) Diamond Head's top, in the background, is rounded by Mr. Washington, along with added shading. So, there is the mystery of the two very similar woodblocks solved, once and for all. All three items includedin the lot. Pre-auction estimate: $2,000-$4,000 NO RESERVE.
